In this general talk we shall introduce the basic concept of utilization of space environment for the Materials and life Science. After the effort of space development and space utilization, microgravity of space environment has been considered as one of the novel tools for materials and life science because it assures weightlessness. In this section, the fundamental mechanism and International Space Station (ISS) experiments will be highlighted. Besides materials processing experiments under microgravity condition in space, material scientists made lots of effort for materials processing studies using a “microgravity simulation laboratory” on earth. Several researches on the ground, however, indicate that a microgravity environment is required for certain experiments that are difficult to conduct on the ground. The importance of weightlessness/containerless environment in certain applications will be presented in brief.
